Revival came through a consortium of heritage rail enthusiasts and the Elgin Railway Market cooperative, who secured a Class 19D locomotive—one of ninety built at North British Works in Glasgow between 1937 and 1948—and refurbished four wooden coaches to 1950s livery. The twice-monthly service now departs from a restored siding near Somerset West, retracing the original alignment through the Hottentots Holland corridor. Passengers board vintage compartments with leather bench seating and brass luggage racks, departing at 08:30 for a two-hour journey that climbs gradients up to 1-in-40 before descending into the valley at walking pace. The terminus at Elgin Railway Market occupies the old goods yard, where corrugated-iron sheds have been repurposed into vendor stalls selling orchard produce, Karoo lamb, and craft beer from the valley's three microbreweries. The market operates year-round, Wednesday through Sunday, but the steam train from Cape Town to Elgin tours run only on select Saturdays between April and November, when fire-risk regulations permit coal-fired locomotives in the mountain corridor. Advance booking is mandatory; walk-up boarding is not permitted due to weight distribution requirements on the heritage rolling stock. The service represents one of the last operational narrow-gauge steam lines in the Western Cape, a region where rail infrastructure has been systematically dismantled since the 1980s. Preservation societies maintain a small fleet of serviceable locomotives, but only the Elgin route combines working heritage rail with a functional destination, rather than circular tourist loops.
